  Hewlett-Packard Sues Acer Over PC Patents  //2008/6/1

Hewlett-Packard is taking Acer to court over Acer's alleged infringement of five HP patents. The lawsuit was filed today in a court located in the Eastern District of Texas. More specifically, HP believes Acer infringed on patents ranging from DVD editing, power management, processing capabilities, clock switching, and other technologies from 1997 to 2003. HP wants both unspecified damages and an injunction forcing Acer to immediately stop selling some products on the U.S. market.

CHINA has overtaken Germany in the global ranking of patent applications to become the fifth-largest source of filings,underscoring an increasing prominence of Asian industrial powers in intellectual property.In its first comprehensive report on patent activity,UN agency WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organisation) found China had a sevenfold increase in patent filings in 10 years.

News that Taiwan intends to amend local IP laws to allow for patented drugs manufactured locally to be exported to poorer countries appears to be aimed at building a revenue model into the manufacture in Taiwan of generic Tamiflu under so-called compulsory license.
